Home Renovation in Shuniah & the Lakeshore

Renovating in Shuniah and along the Lakeshore

Shuniah is the municipality north-east of Thunder Bay, stretching along the Lake Superior shore toward the Sleeping Giant. Homes and cottages here, including those around Silver Islet, sit close to the water, on rock, and in some of the most exposed conditions in the region.

What lakeshore properties need

• Decks and railings built for wind. Open exposure means stronger connections and hardware that stands up to moisture. See deck builders.
• Siding and exterior upgrades that cope with driven wind and temperature swings. See siding installation.
• Seasonal-to-year-round conversions. Cottages becoming full-time homes often need insulation, heat and basement work. See basement renovation and home renovation.
• Rock and access. Shallow bedrock changes footing and concrete plans, and narrow shore roads affect deliveries.

Waterfront properties may also be subject to additional rules and approvals near the shoreline. Ask your contractor which ones apply before design is finalized.
